12in diameter x 48ft-0in long inclined screw conveyor
Customer Challenge:
Wellsville Terminals, an experienced full-service intermodal terminal had recently received a project involving receiving cement in bulk and transloading it to bulk bags. With cement expecting to arrive any day and a demanding customer, Wellsville Terminal was needing to get a system installed and running as quickly as possible. They were able to source the bulk bag filler and now needed a screw conveyor to elevate and convey the cement to the filler. Wellsville contacted SCP on a Tuesday afternoon and explained the project and their need for a quick delivery and by Wednesday morning the engineering and build process had begun.
SCP Solution:
SCP engineers worked closely with Wellsville Terminals’ manager to custom design and supply a screw conveyor system perfectly suited for their needs. The screw conveyor had to be able to meet their demands while also being reliable. The screw conveyor needed to elevate the cement 14ft in the air to the top of the bulk bag filler. There was plenty of distance to elevate the cement so a gradual 20deg incline was utilized to ensure the conveying efficiency was not limited and maintain the long-term reliability of the conveyor. The screw conveyor drive was sized with enough horsepower to both convey the cement up the incline and ensure it could restart after being shut down while loading. The speed was kept low enough to reduce wear on the mechanical components but high enough to keep the cement conveying under the hanger bearings to increase bearing life and not create any obstructions in the material flow. A SCP master seal mechanical shaft seal was used at the lower end of the conveyor to prevent cement leakage out of the trough. This type of mechanical seal uses sealing faces entirely inside the seal housing instead of relying on the shaft as the sealing face. Altogether, SCP was able design, build, assemble and deliver the screw conveyor before Wellsville Terminals’ critical deadline.
