Screener King of Houston, TX, a leading supplier and industry expert in the world of separation technology, has a state-of-the-art testing laboratory for sampling and testing customer products. This laboratory is used to test different screening technologies with a customer’s specific product to ensure the most efficient separation possible is achieved. The laboratory uses a number of feeding technologies to test the product but was in need of a screw feeder for various dry, bulk materials to precisely meter flow to the screeners being tested. In addition to needing to precisely meter the product, the feeder needed to be versatile, mobile and have features like a site window to see the product level. Screener King reached out to SCP for a solution to this unique application.

SCP engineers reviewed Screener King’s requirements in detail and developed a preliminary design to start the collaborative process of delivering a screw feeder to meet all their requirements. The first step was to size the feeder based on the various products and feed rates needed for testing customer products. To allow for the most versatility, the feeder was designed for a high feed rate and with a VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) rated motor so the speed could be varied to precise rate. The hopper was designed for the average batch size used for testing and included mounting points for hopper extensions. Using a wedge shaped hopper with steep sidewalls helped to minimize bridging. A site window was added to allow for observation of the product flow in the hopper and to monitor level. The screw was designed with variable pitch to evenly discharge the hopper and a feeder shroud to accurately control the rate. Finally, a skid was designed to hold the test feeder and allow it to be picked up by a forklift from any side. The entire feeder system was designed, built and delivered in only a few weeks.
