Wells Ice and Cold Storage of Seaford, VA is a regional leader in the storage and distribution of locally caught seafood. Wells has seen a steady increase in business over the past year with an
increase in demand for locally sourced seafood. With this increase came the need to increase ice production and cold storage. To do so a mothballed ice system needed to be brought back online. The ice machine was replaced but the conveyor only needed a few replacement parts to make it functional again. The main part needing replacement was the worn out Dorris screw conveyor drive. Over the years the moisture had heavily corroded the body and parts to the point where it was not salvageable. Wells searched the internet for a solution and after seeing the SCP standard screw conveyor drives decided to reach out to SCP to provide a custom solution for this application.
SCP Solution:
SCP engineers worked closely with Wells Ice and Cold Storage to Design a screw conveyor drive that meet all of their needs. The first challenge was determining the existing drive HP and RPM. Using the existing nameplate information and measuring the sheaves, SCP was able to determine the final output speed of approximately 50 RPM. The HP was pulled off of the existing motor nameplate and determined to be 5 HP. The last key was the driveshaft size and the Wells measured it at 2”. Since the existing drive used a accionamiento del transportador de tornillo a new 5HP at 50 RPM screw conveyor drive was selected to ensure the integration to the old screw conveyor was seamless. The last challenge was selecting a screw conveyor drive that would not hit the curb locations only 12in from the screw conveyor. After reviewing the dimensional drawings of the available drives a Nord SK4282SCP was selected. The Nord screw conveyor drive is an ideal solution because it is compact and the standard harsh duty Nord coating will provide years of protection in this moist environment.
